No more tears from tears

Monday, October 29, 2012

Commercial medical tapes on the market today are great at keeping medical devices attached to the skin, but often can do damage?such as skin tissue tearing?once it's time to remove them.

A research team from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) has invented a quick-release tape that has the strong adhesion properties of commercial medical tape, but without the ouch factor upon removal.

The team was led by Jeffrey Karp, PhD, BWH Division of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Medicine, senior study author in collaboration with The Institute for Pediatric Innovation which defined the need and requirements for a new neonatal adhesive based on national surveys of neonatal clinicians.

The study detailing the tape design will be electronically published on October 29, 2012 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The research was conducted in collaboration with Robert Langer, PhD at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The tape which achieves strong adhesion when securing medical devices to skin, but could also easily peel off safely, utilizes a three-layer design approach that sets a new paradigm for quick-release medical tapes.

"Current adhesive tapes that contain backing and adhesive layers are tailored to fracture at the adhesive-skin interface. With adults the adhesive fails leaving small remnants of adhesive on the skin while with fragile neonate skin, the fracture is more likely to occur in the skin causing significant damage," said Karp. "Our approach transitions the fracture zone away from the skin to the adhesive-backing interface thus completely preventing any harm during removal."

The approach incorporates an anisotropic adhesive interface between the backing and adhesive layers. The anisotropic properties of this middle layer means that it has different physical properties dependent on direction. For instance, take wood, which is stronger along the grain than across it.

The researchers employed laser etching and a release liner to create the anisotropic interface resulting in a medical tape with high shear strength (for strong adhesion) and low peel force (for safe, quick removal). Once the backing is peeled off, any remaining adhesive left on the skin can safely be rolled off with a finger using a "push and roll" technique.

"This is one of the biggest problems faced in the neonate units, where the patients are helpless and repeatedly wrapped in medical tapes designed for adult skin," said Bryan Laulicht, PhD, BWH Division of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Medicine, lead study author.

There are more than 1.5 million injuries each year in the United States caused by medical tape removal. Such injuries in babies and the elderly?populations with fragile skin?can range from skin irritation to permanent scarring.

PFT: Peyton says game harder after neck surgeries

Jimmy Graham, Brandon FlowersAP

We cover all of the biggest injury stories throughout the week and on Friday, but feel free to use this as a one-stop shop to catch up on those posts and any other names worth mentioning that we?ll throw in here every Friday.

Panthers at Bears

With Chris Gamble and Jon Beason going on injured reserve this week, the Panthers removed two of the biggest names from their injury report. Linebacker Antwan Applewhite is out and defensive end Thomas Keiser is doubtful, while defensive end Charles Johnson should play after being listed as probable. The Bears will be without wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, but they are otherwise healthy.

Chargers at Browns

The Chargers are looking healthier coming off their bye with cornerback Shareece Wright questionable and tackle Jared Gaither probable after they both were out of the lineup before the bye week. Wide receiver Eddie Royal is also questionable. As mentioned earlier, the Browns have 22 players on the injury report this week. The big news is that running back Trent Richardson looks set to play after another successful practice. Wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi is also questionable and defensive tackle Ahtyba Rubin has been ruled out.

Seahawks at Lions

Defensive lineman Jason Jones is doubful for Seattle, but he?s expected to make the trip to Detroit. Guard John Moffitt is questionable after missing the last four games, but won?t start if he does play, and coach Pete Carroll said the team has made a decision that they?re keeping to themselves about activating cornerback Walter Thurmond from the PUP list. The Lions have ruled out cornerback Jacob Lacey and safety Amari Spievey while linebacker DeAndre Levy is doubtful. Defensive end Cliff Avril, safety Louis Delmas and wide receiver Titus Young are all expected to play despite questionable tags.

Jaguars at Packers

You already know that running back Maurice Jones-Drew has been ruled out and the Jaguars will also be without defensive back Dwight Lowery. Wide receiver Laurent Robinson is questionable in his attempt to return from a concussion, while quarterback Blaine Gabbert is probable to start after injuring his non-throwing shoulder. The Packers ruled out fullback John Kuhn, cornerback Sam Shields, linebacker Nick Perry and wide receiver Greg Jennings. Defensive tackle B.J. Raji is probable to play after missing the last two weeks and wide receiver Jordy Nelson will be a game-time decision.

Dolphins at Jets

As expected, Dolphins cornerback Richard Marshall will miss Week Eight. Miami has no other serious injury issues, but the Jets will have to wait until closer to kickoff to know if running backs Bilal Powell (doubtful) and Joe McKnight (questionable) will be able to play. Linebacker Bart Scott is doubtful, while defensive tackle Sione Pou?ha could return to the lineup after getting designated as questionable.

Falcons at Eagles

The Falcons won?t have wide receiver Harry Douglas on Sunday. Eagles guard Danny Watkins is doubtful, which could force Dennis Kelly into the starting lineup at right guard.

Redskins at Steelers

It will be another week without wide receiver Pierre Gar?on for the Redskins and safety Brandon Meriweather isn?t ready to return either. Linebacker London Fletcher is questionable so we will have to wait to find out if he holds onto the longest active consecutive games played streak. The Steelers won?t have safety Troy Polamalu, tackle Marcus Gilbert or running back Rashard Mendenhall, while Isaac Redman has a chance of joining Jonathan Dwyer in the backfield after being listed as questionable.

Patriots vs. Rams (in London)

The Patriots ruled out seven players, a number that dropped to six when they placed cornerback Ras-I Dowling on injured reserve. Tight end Aaron Hernandez did not make the trip to London and safety Patrick Chung is also among the missing. Rams wide receiver Danny Amendola is questionable in his attempt to make a quick return from his separated SC joint and the team may be left to start Joe Barksdale at left tackle again with Rodger Saffold out and Wayne Hunter missing practice all week.

Colts at Titans

Colts running back Donald Brown practiced fully on Friday and is listed as questionable. Linebacker Robert Mathis was limited after missing practice on Wednesday and Thursday, but holds the same designation. The Titans will start Mike Otto at left tackle in place of Michael Roos, which might make it a wise choice to give quarterback Jake Locker another week to heal up.

Raiders at Chiefs

The Chiefs are pretty healthy coming out of their bye with running back Peyton Hillis likely to play after getting listed as probable. Defensive end Glenn Dorsey is questionable. Tackle Khalif Barnes and cornerback Shawntae Spencer are still out for the Raiders, who are considering whether or not to activate linebacker Aaron Curry from the PUP list.

Giants at Cowboys

The Giants listed safety Kenny Phillips and defensive tackle Rocky Bernard as doubtful, while running back Ahmad Bradshaw is questionable despite his guarantees that he will be on the field against the Cowboys. The Cowboys will be without running back DeMarco Murray and Felix Jones is questionable as his replacement which could leave a lot of work for Phillip Tanner. Center Phil Costa, defensive lineman Sean Lissemore and safety Matt Johnson will also miss the game for Dallas.

Saints at Broncos

Tight end Jimmy Graham?s status will be determined on Sunday, which means he?ll be traveling with the team to Denver. Linebacker David Hawthorne is in the same boat. The Broncos only have one serious injury concern. Cornerback Tracy Porter is questionable for a date against his old team after experiencing symptoms similar to ones he felt before suffering a seizure this summer.

Shaw Communications Sees No Halt to Industry Consolidation - The ...

TORONTO ? Continuing vertical integration in the Canadian media sector is still on the cards, despite the CRTC rejecting BCE/Bell Canada?s $3.38 billion takeover bid for Astral Media.

That was the conclusion Thursday of Brad Shaw, CEO of Shaw Communications, the western Canadian cable giant, which could yet seek a merger with Corus Entertainment, a broadcaster in which the Calgary-based Shaw family has a controlling stake.

But not just yet, Brad Shaw told analysts after his company released its fourth quarter financial results.

?We realize there's some value and some synergies there (with Corus), but strategically, if the family feels it's right and have the right time to do it, we'll look at it,? he said.

Shaw added the CRTC ruling on the Astral Media deal was about BCE/Bell Canada, rather than reversing course on industry consolidation.

?It seemed to be somewhat more of a Bell-focused decision when you look at it, not so much against VI (vertical integration) in the industry,? he told analysts.

The Shaw family, which also controls Shaw Communications, in 1999 spun off its media assets to create Corus Entertainment.

The CRTC blocking BCE?s proposed deal for Astral Media appears to have put the breaks on industry consolidation that in recent years has seen phone and cable giants acquire indie broadcast content to drive down their pipes.

That trend included Shaw Communications two years ago acquiring the former Canwest Global Communications Corp.?s TV assets and rebranding them as Shaw Media.

Shaw Communications for the fourth quarter to Aug. 31 reported a profit of $133 million, down 20 percent from earnings of $167 million in 2011, on combined revenue up 2.5 per cent to $1.21 billion during the latest frame.

Child Poisonings From Eye Drops, Nose Sprays

Oct. 25, 2012 -- Over-the-counter eyedrops and nose sprays contain powerful drugs that are poisonous in surprisingly small amounts if swallowed, the FDA warns.

Unwary parents often leave these products within easy reach of curious children. From 1997 through 2009, eyedrops injured more than 4,500 children under the age of 5 and nasal sprays injured more than 1,100, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Injury reports show that children can easily open the products, which do not come in child-resistant packages.

The drugs are surprisingly powerful. Swallowing less than a fifth of a teaspoon can seriously harm a child, the FDA says.

The eyedrops in question soothe redness by causing blood vessels in the eye to constrict. Visine is a popular brand; there are many generic versions. Nose drops work in a similar way, tightening blood vessels in the nose. Afrin, Dristan, and Mucinex are popular brands, and there are many generic versions.

The products contain the active ingredients tetrahydrozoline, naphazoline, or oxymetazoline.

All three drugs are in the class of drugs called imidazolines. When placed in the eye or nose as directed, the drugs only affect that part of the body. But if swallowed, they quickly have effects throughout the body.

"Generally, symptoms can occur in as little as one hour, peaking at eight hours, and resolving after 12-36 hours," a CPSC briefing paper notes. "Even though the symptoms resolve in a relatively short amount of time, ingestion of imidazolines can result in severe life-threatening consequences, such as decreased breathing, decreased heart rate, and loss of consciousness that require hospitalization to ensure recovery."

The CPSC has proposed a new rule requiring child-resistant packaging for these products. That rule has yet to be finalized. Even when it's final, the rule will give manufacturers at least a year to comply. Meanwhile, many homes have at least one of the products in medicine cabinets.

To avoid accidental poisonings, the FDA says parents and caregivers should:

  • Store medicines in a safe location that is too high for young children to reach or see.
  • Never leave medicines or vitamins out on a kitchen counter or a child's bedside.
  • If a medicine bottle has a safety cap, relock it each time you use it.
  • Remind babysitters, houseguests, and visitors to keep purses, bags, or coats that have medicines in them away and out of sight when they are in your home.
  • Avoid taking medicines in front of young children because they like to mimic adults.

The FDA lists several specific products in its warning. Here's the list, which includes some but by no means all store and generic brands:

French village honors patron saints' legendary voyage

Pilgrims carry statues of Saint Mary Salome and Saint Mary Jacobe during a procession on a beach of Saintes-Maries-de-la-mer, southwestern France.

A pilgrim carries a flag of the 'Saintes Maries' Brotherhood.

The European Pressphoto Agency reports ??Every October, pilgrims from all over Europe gather in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, France, to honor the village's patron saints. ?

According to Christian texts, Mary Jacobe (the sister of Mary, mother of Jesus) and Mary Salome (the mother of the Apostles James and John) were expelled from Jerusalem with Mary Magdalene and many others around the year A.D. 40. After being shipped off on a boat without sails or oars, they reached France's Camargue coast. The Breviary of the Aix-en-Provence Diocese says that the two women remained on the shore and converted the local people and Romans occupying the region.

As part of the annual pilgrimage, worshipers pay their respects to the pair during a mass to their relics, contained in a decorated display case. Then guardians on horseback, priests, pilgrims and locals wearing traditional attire take part in a procession through the village carrying statues of Saint Mary Salome and Saint Mary Jacobe. Their march takes them to the sea, where the two statues are blessed.?

Argentine leader orders insurers how to invest

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) ? Argentina's Merval stock market index dropped Tuesday after the government announced new economic controls, including a mandate that insurance companies sharply increase their investing inside Argentina.

President Cristina Fernandez is proposing that Congress put her government in charge of the currently self-regulated stock and commodities markets, and she decreed that insurance companies must invest up to 30 percent of their holdings in "productive activities" to improve Argentina's infrastructure.

"This decree links the insurance industry with the development of the actual economy," said the decree published Tuesday.

With her government redirecting resources toward "projects that have a clear productive and social purpose," insurers will "encounter new possibilities of investment that that will feed a virtuous cycle of development with social inclusion," it said. The decree, effective Wednesday, puts Deputy Economy Minister Axel Kiciloff and Commerce Secretary Guillermo Moreno in charge of a committee that will decide where the insurers can invest their holdings.

The list begins with projects already sponsored by the nationalized pension system and other government-run funds, but also can include whatever the committee decides is "productive, according to the objectives of the political economy."

Economy Minister Hernan Lorenzino said Argentina's insurers are sitting on $13 billion but put only $18.5 million in what the government considers productive projects. The government hopes to raise that to $1.5 billion by mid-2013.

This "will be good for the national economy and for the insurance sector as well, since these investments have proven to be the best in terms of profits and security in recent years," Lorenzino said in a radio interview.

Argentina's Merval stock market index dropped more than 3.5 percent Tuesday after Fernandez made the surprise announcements Monday night.

More bad economic news in Europe was partly to blame, said economist Milagros Gismondi of the Orlando J. Ferreres y Asociados consultancy in Buenos Aires. But she told The Associated Press that markets also were slumping due to continued uncertainty about the future of Argentina's economy.

Longtime Indian activist Russell Means dies at 72

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) ? Russell Means spent a lifetime as a modern American Indian warrior. He railed against broken treaties, fought for the return of stolen land and even took up arms against the federal government.

A onetime leader of the American Indian Movement, he called national attention to the plight of impoverished tribes and often lamented the waning of Indian culture. After leaving the movement in the 1980s, the handsome, braided activist was still a cultural presence, appearing in several movies.

Means, who died Monday from throat cancer at age 72, helped lead the 1973 uprising at Wounded Knee ? a bloody confrontation that raised America's awareness about the struggles of Indians and gave rise to a wider protest movement that lasted for the rest of the decade.

Before AIM, there were few national advocates for American Indians. Means was one of the first to emerge. He sought to restore Indians' pride in their culture and to challenge a government that had paid little attention to tribes in generations. He was also one of the first to urge sports teams to do away with Indian names and mascots.

"No one except Hollywood stars and very rich Texans wore Indian jewelry," Means said, recalling the early days of the movement. And there were dozens, if not hundreds, of athletic teams "that in essence were insulting us, from grade schools to college. That's all changed."

AIM was founded in the late 1960s to demand that the government honor its treaties with American Indian tribes. The movement eventually faded away, Means said, as Native Americans became more self-aware and self-determined.

There were plenty of American Indian activists before AIM, but it became the "radical media gorilla," said Paul DeMain, editor of News from Indian Country, a national newspaper focused on tribal affairs.

"If someone needed help, you called on the American Indian Movement, and they showed up and caused all kind of ruckus and looked beautiful on a 20-second clip on TV that night," DeMain said.

Means and AIM co-founder Dennis Banks were charged in 1974 for their role in the Wounded Knee uprising in which hundreds of protesters occupied the town on the site of the 1890 Indian massacre. Protesters and federal authorities were locked in a standoff for 71 days and frequently exchanged gunfire. Before it was over, two tribal members were killed and a federal agent seriously wounded.

After a trial that lasted several months, a judge threw out the charges on grounds of government misconduct.

Other protests led by Means included an American Indian prayer vigil on top of Mount Rushmore and the seizure of a replica of the Mayflower on Thanksgiving Day in Plymouth, Mass.

"The friendship between Russell and I goes back almost 50 years," Banks said late Monday night. "I lost a great friend. But native people lost one of the greatest warriors of modern-day times. Truly, he was a great visionary. He was controversial, yes. But he brought issues to the front page."

But Means' constant quest for the spotlight raised doubts about his motives. Critics who included many fellow tribe members said his main interest was building his own notoriety.

Means said his most important accomplishment was the proposal for the Republic of Lakotah, a plan to carve out a sovereign Indian nation inside the United States. He took the idea all the way to the United Nations, even though it was ignored by tribal governments closer to home, including his own Oglala Sioux leaders, with whom he often clashed.

For decades, Means was dogged by questions about whether the group promoted violence, especially the 1975 slaying of a woman in the tribe and the gun battles with federal agents at Wounded Knee.

Authorities believe three AIM members shot and killed Annie Mae Aquash on the Pine Ridge reservation on the orders of someone in AIM's leadership because they suspected she was an FBI informant.

Two activists ? Arlo Looking Cloud and John Graham ? were both eventually convicted of murder. The third has never been charged.

Also in 1975, murder charges were filed against Means and Dick Marshall, an AIM member, in the shooting death of a Sioux man at a saloon in the town of Scenic, S.D. Marshall served 24 years in prison. Means was acquitted.

His activism extended to tribes beyond the United States. In the mid-1980s, Means traveled to Nicaragua to support indigenous Miskito Indians who were fighting the Sandinista government.

Born on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Means grew up in the San Francisco area and battled drugs and alcohol as a young man before becoming an early leader of AIM.

With his rugged good looks and long, dark braids, he also was known for a handful of Hollywood roles, most notably in the 1992 movie "The Last of the Mohicans," in which he portrayed Chingachgook alongside Daniel Day-Lewis' Hawkeye.

He also appeared in the 1994 film "Natural Born Killers," voiced Chief Powhatan in the 1995 animated film "Pocahontas" and guest starred in 2004 on the HBO series "Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Means also ran unsuccessfully for the Libertarian nomination for president in 1988 and briefly served as a vice presidential candidate in 1984 on the ticket of Hustler publisher Larry Flynt.

Means always considered himself a Libertarian and couldn't believe that anyone would want to call themselves a Republican or a Democrat.

"It's just unconscionable that America has become so stupid," he said.

Means often refused interviews and verbally blasted journalists who showed up to cover his public appearances. Instead, he chose to speak to his fan base through YouTube videos and blog posts on his website.

Means recounted his life in the book "Where White Men Fear to Tread." He said he pulled no punches in the autobiography, admitting to his frailties but also acknowledging his successes.

"I tell the truth, and I expose myself as a weak, misguided, misdirected, dysfunctional human being I used to be," he said.

Means died at his ranch in Porcupine, S.D. He announced in August 2011 that he had inoperable throat cancer and told The Associated Press that he would forego mainstream medicine in favor of traditional American Indian remedies.

Means' death came a day after former Sen. George McGovern died in Sioux Falls at the age of 90. McGovern had traveled to Wounded Knee with then-Sen. James Abourezk during the takeover to try to negotiate an end to hostilities.

"I've lost two good friends in a matter of two to three days," Abourezk said Monday. "I don't pretend to understand it."

Oglala Sioux Tribe spokeswoman Donna Salomon said wake services for Means' will be Wednesday on Pine Ridge, and his ashes will be scattered in the Black Hills on Thursday.

George Steinbrenner would've issued public apology

NEW YORK (AP) ? George Steinbrenner would have issued a public apology.

After leading the league in wins this year, the New York Yankees didn't just lose to Detroit in the AL championship series. They got swept in one of the more humiliating moments in the team's history.

The four-game wipeout made headlines ? A-Rod's benching, Derek Jeter's injury, Robinson Cano's slump. But it also revealed serious cracks in the foundation, showing a team full of aging All-Stars at the plate, in the field and on the mound that suddenly seems a long, long way from championship caliber.

"Obviously, we're all getting older," Andy Pettitte said Thursday night after the season-ending 8-1 loss to the Tigers.

Jeter broke an ankle near the end. Mariano Rivera busted a knee back in the spring. The Yankees transformed baseball's bruisers into the Bashed Bombers, closer to AARP years than MVP seasons.

Alex Rodriguez was so bad, the $275 million man was benched in three of nine postseason games and pinch hit for in three others, a possible prelude to a forced departure from pinstripes.

Yankees co-chairperson Hank Steinbrenner won't address A-Rod's future, saying "I'm not going to get into that at this point." But he does think too much blame is being directed at Rodriguez.

"So is it fair to accuse him of everything but the Kennedy assassination? No, it's not fair, but we'll see what happens from this point on," Steinbrenner said Friday.

Six key players didn't hit their weight, with Rodriguez joined by Cano, Curtis Granderson, Nick Swisher, Russell Martin and Eric Chavez.

His life already a soap opera off the field, A-Rod turned into daily fodder for on-field intrigue.

"It wasn't just one guy struggling," Rodriguez said. "It was a collective group, and it was a very unique situation."

Not quite. They floundered for two months, nearly blowing a 10-game lead in the heat of summer before holding off Baltimore on the final night for the AL East title.

Easily the oldest big league team at the season's start, they're on track to start next year with a 38-year-old shortstop with limited range coming off ankle surgery (Jeter), a 43-year-old closer returning from knee surgery (Rivera), a 37-year-old third baseman overpowered by right-handed pitchers (A-Rod), a 40-year-old left-hander who missed nearly three months because of a broken ankle (Pettitte) and a 38-year-old right-hander who topped the team in starts and innings (Hiroki Kuroda).

Their postseason star was a 40-year-old outfielder (Raul Ibanez), their center fielder struck out 195 times (Granderson), their left fielder played just 17 regular-season games because of an elbow injury (Brett Gardner) and their catcher hit .211 (Martin).

"It's difficult. It's disappointing. It's not where we want to be," general manager Brian Cashman said. "I'm very surprised."

Their .188 postseason batting average was the lowest ever for a team that played at least seven games. Rodriguez took the brunt of the blame.

Owed $114 million over the next five seasons, Rodriguez became the world's most expensive pinch hitter during the ALCS, a platoon player against left-handed pitchers on a team facing four righty starters.

"I've never thought about going to another team. My focus is to stay here. Let's make that very, very clear," he said. "Number two, I don't expect to be mediocre. I expect to do what I've done for a long time."

Yankees president Randy Levine joked in April with Miami Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria about the possibility of dealing A-Rod to his hometown team.

"Take him. Tell me what you're willing to do," Levine said before the pair laughed.

After this debacle, talk could turn serious. The Yankees likely would have to eat 50 to 75 percent of what Rodriguez is due, but they may focus on the millions saved rather than the millions spent.

Back in 1981, after the Yankees took a 2-0 Series lead against the Los Angeles Dodgers and lost four in a row, George Steinbrenner issued one of his most famous statements, saying: "I want to sincerely apologize to the people of New York and to the fans of the New York Yankees everywhere for the performance of the Yankee team."

Hal Steinbrenner, who succeeded his father as controlling owner, is less impetuous. He wants to get the team under the $189 million luxury tax threshold in 2014.

Sending one of their lineup's senior citizens to finish his career in Florida would be a start.

Proud of his accomplishments and in constant need of admiration, Rodriguez may hold his postseason putdown against manager Joe Girardi.

"As far as I know, we're OK," Girardi said. "It's not something I wanted to do. All of you know that. But I don't have any signals that he's mad at me."

A-Rod, as always, tried to say the right thing.

"If I do what I'm supposed to be doing, neither Joe or Cashman can bench me," he explained.

His stay in New York always was a marriage of money.

After giving A-Rod a record $252 million contract, Texas traded him to the Yankees after three seasons and even agreed to pay $67 million of the $179 million remaining ? an amount reduced by $21 million when A-Rod opted out of that deal following the 2007 season. Then the Yankees re-signed him to an even more massive megadeal, as much a weight on their payroll as his bat has become in the batting order.

Following the failure for the third straight year to win the World Series, there will be a slew of decisions. Exercising $15 million options on Cano and Granderson are a given, as is signing Rivera for 2013. They'll likely try to persuade Pettitte to pitch another year and attempt to re-sign Kuroda and possibly Ichiro Suzuki, whose bat was among the few with a sign of life.

Swisher seems set to depart and Ibanez could be one older player too many. Rafael Soriano, who filled in for Rivera, could turn down a $14 million salary for next year, terminate his contract and become a free agent.

"Every year the roster changes," Cashman said.

By now, the front office knows it needs an injection of youth. The wipeout may speed the turnover.

"We got a team of Hall of Famers, superstars," Cano said.

And by the time a player is almost certain of enshrinement in Cooperstown, it means the end is a lot closer than the beginning.

Majola sacked by Cricket South Africa ? Cricket News Roundup ? Part 1 ? October 19, 2012

Cricket South Africa has fired suspended chief executive Gerald Majola after he was found guilty on all charges placed against him during a disciplinary hearing.

Majola did not attend the hearing but the CSA accepted the verdict, handed by Chairperson Karel Tip, who found him liable for accepting bonuses without informing the board during the staging of the 2009 IPL in South Africa.

The incident first rose in August 2009; however CSA denied any wrong doings at that time, though ordered a thorough investigation. An audit was done by KPMG before further exploration into the matter was conducted by Judge Chris Nicholson, who ultimately advised the board to suspend Majola pending a hearing, the results of which came out today.

New Zealand Cricket Board have added former speedster, Shane Bond, to the national team?s coaching staff, appointing him as a bowling mentor following the ending of Damien Wright?s tenure.

Bond, who has been working with the board to promote cricket in the region since retiring, had earlier expressed his desire to work with the upcoming pacers in order to bring consistency to their game. New Zealand has a hectic schedule ahead, which sees them taking on Sri Lanka, South Africa and England.

"The last couple of years have been about preparing myself to perhaps have the opportunity to take this role, and I'm just rapt that I got it,? he said.

Sydney Sixers? all-rounder, Shane Watson, has backed his franchise to go all the way in the ongoing Champions League T20 following an impressive start to the campaign.

The Sixers are the inform side in the competition after they defeated Chennai Super Kings, Yorkshire and Highveld Lions in their group. They have already qualified for the knock-out stage and are certain to top their group.

Watson, whose stint with the Sixers has been cut short following Cricket Australia?s decision to call him back ahead of the South Africa series, is confident that his franchise can wan without him.

"For us (the Sixers) to be able to qualify for the semi-finals was certainly my goal," Watson said. "It's going to be sad to leave. I know with the quality of group that we have, we're a real chance of winning this."

See Dane Run: Get Your Rub On

If I knew exactly how I am able to recover rather quickly from one race and move onto the next, I would bottle it, put a nice label on it, and sell it at marathon expos all over the world. I do know, however, that there are certain things I strictly adhere to which have undoubtedly helped me continue to run and race healthy for ten-plus years now. One of those is getting regular massages.

I remember where I was sitting: a sandwich place in Bellevue, WA with my friend Todd in 2006.? It was the day before the now defunct Seafair Marathon. My cell phone rang and I recognized the area code but not the number. I answered and was put in touch with a massage therapist, Terrel Hale, who was donating his services for the rest of the year in order to make sure I was able to complete my 52 Marathons in 52 weekends. Now, I had already been aware of how important massages is to overall health and fitness and was getting one about every month prior to this phone call. At the time, it was all I thought I could afford. However, after getting the massages from Terrel for the remaining five months of that year, I changed my tune. Massages were no longer luxuries - they were necessities.

The knock on massages is that they are too pricey. Now living on the other side of the country and many years removed from the massages I received from Terrel, I can understand that rational, being that they are no longer donated. But people spend hundreds and thousands of dollars on orthotics, hospital trips, doctor bills etc., when a simple $60 massage can help prevent many of those problems. We spend so much money maintaining our cars but so little money maintaining our bodies. When I moved to Salt Lake City, I made it a point to find an inexpensive massage place. Fortunately, I found a school where both practicing students and licensed therapists work together. Are the massages by the students the best in the world? No. Are they very inexpensive and still far better than nothing? Yes! In fact, I could get a massage for three straight weeks for the price of a regular massage elsewhere. That constant maintenance and care to my tired body has paid dividends. Now that I live in Portland, I have been frequenting a few places looking for one that has exactly what I need. in the meantime, even ones which are not perfect are better than nothing!

I have more or less been injured in every sport I have ever played. While I have had aches and pains and soreness abound from what I do with my body in the running and triathlon world, I have now completed 142 marathons and continue to run injury free. Is some of it from genetics? I have no doubt. Is part of it my diet, which I talk about here? No one can rightfully question that. But I also know that taking care of my body not only means fueling it properly from within but also making sure it is cared for from the outside.

The benefits of massage are unchallenged. Physically it helps repair you. Mentally it rests your mind and puts you in a better place. As an athlete these two things are essentially priceless which, if I do the math right, is far less than $60. Don?t think you have it in your budget? Try not eating out at a restaurant once a week. Brown bag your lunch for a few days. The money will add up.

Your body will thank you.

Dem, GOP insiders expect better debate performance from Obama

There is bipartisan agreement on at least one thing as the second presidential debate looms: President Obama will turn in a better performance on this occasion than he did last time around.

Obama?s weak and disengaged display at the first debate on Oct. 3 allowed Republican challenger Mitt Romney to reshape a race that had seemed to be slipping from his grasp.

Romney has risen rapidly in the polls since then. He now holds a lead in many nationwide surveys, while Obama clings to a shrinking advantage in several battleground states.

But Washington insiders of all ideological stripes concur that Obama is too competitive a man and too gifted a politician to slip up so dramatically for a second time, when the candidates go under the spotlight at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., on Tuesday.

Underlining the stakes involved, Obama has been in near-seclusion in Williamsburg, Va., since Saturday afternoon. He will not leave until the day of the debate.?

Obama took a break to deliver pizza to campaign volunteers on Sunday, and told reporters his preparations were ?going great.? Even such an innocuous comment marked a tonal contrast from the lead-up to Denver.?

Making a similar visit back then, Obama had only semi-jokingly complained that prep was ?a drag. They?re making me do my homework.?

The president is accompanied in Williamsburg by the same team that readied him for the first encounter, including senior advisor David Axelrod, former communications director Anita Dunn and Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), who has been playing the role of Romney.

Obama has already studied video of the ignominious first debate.

?He knows he wants to have a stronger performance,? one aide told The Hill.

An Obama campaign spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, said that the president was ?fired up, energized and excited.?

A Romney aide offered a more sardonic commentary on Obama?s likely performance.

?He?ll probably have a cup of coffee this time,? the source said, going on to poke fun at the explanation for the president?s desultory showing offered by former Vice President Al Gore: that he might have been affected by Denver?s high altitude.

?The altitude won?t be as bad? on Tuesday, the Team Romney member said. ?The elevation is less than 70 feet above sea level, so the president won?t have that as an excuse.?

But some Republicans fear that Obama?s first performance might actually help him this week, at least so far as expectations are concerned.

?The bar for Obama is low,? said Texas-based GOP consultant Mark McKinnon. ?All he has to do is show up awake this time and it will be scored a victory compared to last time.?

Democrats, meanwhile, take heart from the fact that Obama has long displayed a capacity to perform at his best when the pressure is at its most intense.

This pattern has been noticeable in both campaigns and governing, they say.

In 2008, when the incendiary sermons of Rev. Jeremiah Wright threatened to engulf his candidacy, Obama responded with a speech on race that was among his finest moments.

In the White House, he piloted his healthcare law through Congress after some of his advisors had given up hope of widespread reform and urged him to settle for more modest goals.

?He is a fourth-quarter player; he?s really good when the pressure is on,? said Democratic consultant Bob Shrum, who has worked on numerous presidential campaigns.

?I anticipate Obama being as good as he has ever been,? Republican strategist Trey Hardin agreed. ?I anticipate him bringing his A+ game. I would expect [to see] an individual who is a better communicator, who can be likable ? and who is going to prepare in every waking moment between now and then.?

Observers on both sides of the partisan divide are still coming to terms with the turbulence of the past few weeks.

First, a covertly-filmed video emerged of Romney?s ?47 percent" remarks; then Obama crashed and burned at the debate; and, most recently, Vice President Biden soothed frazzled Democratic nerves with his combative performance in his debate against Romney?s running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), last week.

There was no clear victor in the Biden-Ryan tussle, but Democratic strategists like Doug Thornell argued that the vice president?s vigor in defense of the administration was important in itself.

?He calmed some of these Democrats who were thinking of jumping off the bridge and now they are going to step back from the ledge,? Thornell argued. ?They saw a guy there fighting his butt off. That meant a lot to the people who are part of the Obama campaign, from Chicago [headquarters] to the people on the ground in states like Iowa. Emotionally, psychologically, that is a big lift.?

Even if Biden restored liberal spirits, however, his gains could all be undone if Obama does not to come to the stage in Hempstead in finer fettle than he did in Denver.

Obama needs ?to drop the cool, detached, professorial demeanor and go right at Romney on all the issues, including his comments on the 47 percent and the $5 trillion tax cuts,? said Jim Manley, the former head of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid?s (D-Nev.) communications operation, who now works for lobbying firm Quinn Gillespie.

?He?s got to be willing to draw the contrasts and be aggressive, and also be presidential,? Shrum concurred. ?The ideal is being authoritative and engaged.?

Tuesday?s debate is the only one that will be in a town hall format, with the questions being posed by voters in attendance and the moderator ? CNN?s Candy Crowley ? confining herself mostly to the role of a facilitator.

The format brings its own challenges and opportunities for both Romney and Obama.

Republican strategist Ken Lundberg fretted that the setting could, from his side?s perspective, be a problem. Obama ?thrives in that environment and Romney needs to realize that,? Lundberg said.

On the brighter side, from the GOP?s perspective, ?we have seen that there are two Obamas: one in front of the teleprompter and one not in front of the teleprompter,? Hardin said. ?At a town hall debate, you don?t even have notes, which you do at a podium. I think Romney is going to be prepared to throw so much at Obama.?

Republicans believe that another victory for Romney could see a decisive erosion of Obama?s support.

For Democrats, meanwhile, a good performance from the president would not just right the ship; it would also be a welcome balm after the debacle in Denver.

?The president is a big-game player,? Doug Thornell said. ?I fully expect him to do well ? and erase what happened.?

Tritton Kunai headset ships to chatty PS3 and PS Vita gamers

There are plenty of gaming headsets, but only so many specifically tuned to the PlayStation audience that aren't made by Sony itself. Mad Catz' Tritton label has just shipped a version of its Kunai wired headset optimized for both the PS3 and the PS Vita that might redress that (admittedly minor) deficit. About the only real customization for Vita owners is the option for a shorter 3-foot cord, but PS3 owners can plug in through USB and adjust voice volume independently from the gunshots and explosions. Regardless of which game console the Kunai links to, there's a modest 25Hz to 20KHz headphone frequency range and few frills aside from a detachable boom microphone. Tritton is mostly counting on the price to lure us in, which just might work -- at $60, berating players in-game with a Kunai will cost as much as one of the games themselves.

Real Estate is Still a Good Deal - Heroic Investing

Welcome! If this is your first time visiting Jason Hartman's website, please read this page to learn more about what we do here. You may also be interested in receiving updates from our blog via RSS or via email if you prefer. If you have any questions about first responder finance feel free to contact us anytime! Thanks!

The US housing market appears to be on the road to recovery after the recent collapse that put millions of foreclosed homes on the market and turned homeowners across the country into renters. At the same time, home prices are rising and fewer foreclosures are hitting the markets in some areas, leaving potential investors wondering if real estate investing really yields results. But as Jason Hartman says, there?s still never been a better time to invest in rental real estate.

Recent reports on the fallout from the foreclosure crisis suggest that the supply of available foreclosure properties is drying up, with fewer single-family homes making it to the market as distressed properties. While that can be true in certain markets, many more foreclosures are still being processed, as lenders and the courts work to clear a backlog of foreclosure filings.

One major reason for the sluggish clearing of these cases relates to ongoing investigations into the legalities of many filings, with questions raised about proper documentation and the ownership of actual titles. As these cases are resolved, some real estate experts predict periods of heavy activity in distressed property sales, as these ?delayed foreclosures? work their way through the system and onto the market.

Another outcome of the housing collapse is the rapidly growing rental market. In some areas of the country, renters outnumber homeowners. Many of these renters are former homeowners, too, who lost their houses to foreclosure. Even though interest rates are low and financing is available, large numbers of people just aren?t financially stable enough to purchase a home, and will remain long-term renters. And, in some areas, large populations of childless professionals or students often opt to rent rather than own a dwelling. The result: a diverse, expanding group of potential tenants.

Along with the expanding demand for rental housing comes higher rents. In major markets around the country, and many smaller ones as well, the cost of rental housing continues to rise, with no downturn in sight. For investors in rental real estate, this means that setting competitive rents creates the potential for a higher return in the current market. Alternatively, pricing your rental at slightly below the current average can ensure that you?ll keep steady tenants, with benefits as well for the long-term profitability of your investment.

Even though some areas are experiencing a temporary lull in the availability of foreclosed single-family homes, other kinds of properties are still available, such as duplexes, triplexes and quadriplexes. Since most lenders treat properties containing up to four units as equivalent to a single family home for the purposes of financing, investing in these kinds of properties can be a profitable alternative to the typical single family home.

Conditions in the housing market are constantly changing. But a strong rental market along with continued availability of low priced properties, makes this a good time to launch an investing career based on Jason Hartman?s strategies for buying and managing rental real estate.

Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d. City Album Preview

Kendrick Lamar ? good kid, m.A.A.d. city [Album Preview]

In a matter of just a few short weeks, my fellow California native, Kendrick Lamar, will be dropping his debut major label album entitled good kid, m.A.A.d city, which will be, as he said in an interview with Fuse, a place for him to ?tell [the] stories that [he has] never told.? These stories, he says, are what first inclined him to make this album, almost as a therapeutic process to liberate the negative images and emotions that have been repressed in his memory since his childhood in Compton.

Despite the contract that was inked this year between Top Dawg Entertainment and Dr. Dre?s Aftermath Entertainment, Kendrick has told sources that instead of working with mainstream production artists, he?ll primarily be working with producers from past projects. Which ones he chose have yet to be revealed, however, one of the fresh names on his upcoming effort is renowned Canadian producer, T-Minus, who has laid down tracks for everyone from Ludacris? ?How Low?, to DJ Khaled?s ?I?m On One?, and Wale?s ?Ambition.? With the albums second single, T-Minus applies a cracking snare and quick hi-hat matched with a spacey synth on ?Swimming Pools (Drank).?

Now I done grew up
Round some people living their life in bottles

Granddaddy had the golden flask
Back stroke every day in Chicago

Some people like the way it feels
Some people wanna kill their sorrows
Some people wanna fit in with the popular
That was my problem

A lot of rappers today attempt to glorify the act of consuming drugs (*cough*Juicy J*cough*); Kendrick is the complete opposite. In these verses, he is referring to the memories he has of a family dependent on alcohol, and how he was brought up in this environment. As a child, he was lead to believe that drinking was normal, that it was the way to get women and become cool, when in truth, this only creates a distorted view of reality. Lamar says that at the end of the day, he came to a decision, ?[he] can either become a drunk or a casual drinker.? This image of innocence became the inspiration behind his album cover, which features a young, wide-eyed Kendrick sitting on the leg of a family member next to a table with both a baby bottle on the far end, and a 40oz bottle on the closer end.

Do you remember when Kendrick released the albums first single back in April with Dr. Dre called ?The Recipe???Originally, I, like thousands of other people, believed it was going to be part of Dr. Dre?s imaginary upcoming third studio album Detox. Well, it appears that it has officially made the cut, not for Dr. Dre, but for good kid, m.A.A.d city. I?m hyped to see where this track will fit into the album.

Another released single, ?Art of Peer Pressure?, discusses a typical night with the homies. ?Bumping Jeezy first album looking distracted/Speaking language only we know, you think is an accent/The windows roll down all I see is a hand pass it/Hotboxing like George Foreman grilling the masses/Of the working world, we pulled up on a bunch of working girls/And asked them what they working with ? look at me/I got the blunt in my mouth.? Here, he talks about how an evening with his friends can easily turn him into a different man, one caught up with women, drugs, and other obstreperous acts (an activity which is easily relatable).

Other recently released singles that could easily have made the album, include ?Cartoon & Cereal??featuring Gunplay,?and ?Westside, Right On Time??featuring Young Jeezy. Not to mention a track with Lady Gaga (yes Lady Gaga), called ?PARTYNAUSEOUS,? which Kendrick decided not to put on the album because it didn?t quite mesh with the artistic concept.

Just a few days ago Kendrick released the tracklist for good kid, m.A.A.d city, which is availible for pre-order now. Unwilling to let up any momentum going into the album?s release, Kendrick also just dropped off yet another awe-inspiring track. The big homie, and fellow Metrojolt writer, Osamagbe offers his thoughts:

It?s really nice to see an emcee of Kendrick Lamar?s caliber transition from being an underground no name a few years ago, to an up and coming (somewhat) mainstream artist today. Since his March signing to Dr. Dre?s Aftermath label, Kendrick has dropped a series of radio-friendly singles for his October 22nd debut album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, while still retaining his underground appeal and conscious integrity. Keeping this quality in mind, Kendrick is back with his latest single, the Just Blaze-produced, certified BANGER, ?Compton?. With a dramatically powerful horn-loop that is reminiscent of Just Blaze?s phenomenal production on Jay Electronica?s Exihibit C, Kendrick wastes little time bearing his teeth and commencing a fluid verbal attack all over this beat:

Now everybody serenade the new fate of Kendrick Lamar,
This is King Kendrick Lamar,
King Kendrick and I meant it
My point intended is raw,
Fix your lenses forensics woulda told you Kendrick got killed pretend its a massacre

Overall this song hits several high notes for me. It?s simply great production and great lyrics from two talented artists. My only complaint is the obvious ghostwriting that Kendrick does for Dr. Dre who features on the song. Now Dr. Dre?s been getting verses ghostwritten for him since forever, but on this song it gets to be a bit annoying to hear two artists use literally the exact same flow right after each other when you know only one of them actually deserves credit. I think if Kendrick had kept Dre off the feature and just spit those verses he wrote for Dre himself, this would easily be a five star song. Not to take anything away from it though, it is definitely worth a few listens plus the beat fucking bangs.

I am putting up a link to buy this on iTunes. If you like the song, you definitely need to be commercially supporting artists like Kendrick Lamar, so that the music industry starts backing artists with some actual talent.

?It?s not just music to me,? Kendrick says. ?This is a story about the youth and the people that they called delinquents in my city.?

Keep your eyes peeled for Kendrick Lamar?s good kid, m.A.A.d city dropping on October 22. It?s sure to be a classic.
