PSA: $25 Google Play credit for Nexus 7 ends this weekend

PSA $25 Google Play credit for Nexus 7 ends this weekend

Those who have been keeping a close eye on Google's 7-inch, Jelly Bean-loaded Nexus 7 would know that the company kindly includes 25 bucks worth of Play credit with any purchase of said tablet. Unfortunately, as the famed cliché would tell us, all good things must come to an end -- and, well, such is the case with this neat promotion, which will expire on Sunday, September 30th. Here's the good news, however: there's still a relatively good amount of time for folks interested to get it on the Google Play deal, so now would be the perfect moment to snag what some are calling the best $200 tablet -- and who knows, this might even lead to a post-order Gangnam Style celebration of your own.

Los Angeles revives traffic jam warnings for "Carmageddon 2"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Car-crazed Los Angeles is preparing for a weekend of potential traffic gridlock that has earned the nickname "Carmageddon 2" amid fears drivers might not heed warnings to stay off the roads during a massive 53-hour freeway closure.

Warnings of nightmare jams last year in a phase of the same road-closing construction project kept so many people home that apocalyptic predictions of "Carmageddon" failed to materialize.

"Carmageddon, Schmarmageddon," Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky said last year, after the 42-hour 405 Freeway shutdown was over.

But there are worries this year's project could result in more traffic, largely because it went so smoothly last year.

"If people don't think it's a problem, it will be one," Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Koretz told Reuters.

The shutdown of a 10-mile (16-kilometre) stretch of the 405 Freeway will begin at midnight on Friday, with closures of on-ramps at 7 p.m. Friday (0200 GMT Saturday), Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Marc Littman said.

Lanes will open again at 5 a.m. on Monday, he said.

The shutdown is to allow workers to demolish the north side of a bridge that spans the 405 Freeway in the Sepulveda Pass as part of a $1 billion freeway widening project, Littman said. The south side of the bridge was demolished last year and has been rebuilt wider, just as the north side will be, he said.

A half million cars and trucks traverse the Sepulveda Pass stretch of the 405 Freeway on a typical weekend.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has held a dozen press conferences in recent weeks on the freeway shutdown and is spending $150,000 on advertising to remind the public about it, Littman said.

The California Department of Transportation has been warning about the closure for over a month on electronic freeway signs, some as far away as Sacramento, 360 miles north of Los Angeles.

Traffic information service INRIX said this week that if Los Angeles drivers do not heed calls to avoid travel, traffic could increase by 45 percent on Sepulveda Boulevard alongside the stretch of the 405 Freeway being shut down.

2012: The tastebud election

Every four years since 1984, Hanisch Bakery & Coffee Shop of Red Wing, Minnesota sells two sets of buttercream cookies ? one decorated red and one blue ? representing the Republican and Democrat candidate running for president that year. So far, every cookie that won the bake-off won the election.

Accurate? Yes. Scientific? Not so much.

Hanisch Bakery is one of several food merchants around the country that now pits presidential candidates against each other, using food and beverages to predict who will win the Oval Office.

Heath Hall, co-owner of D.C.-based Pork Barrel BBQ, began a ?BBQ Straw Poll? this year in which competitors buy Mitt Romney or Barack Obama T-shirts and bumper stickers off the restaurant?s website to gauge who will win the 2012 election. Each item purchased receives one vote, and followers can track for weekly progress updates on Twitter.

Hall feels that ?the BBQ voter? represents an accurate cross-section of America because the cooking style is universally embraced by nearly every demographic and socioeconomic group nationwide.

?It?s probably the truest food that relates to all kinds of voters. It doesn?t matter if you?re male, female, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, rich, poor, or where you live geographically ? it really appeals to the entire melting pot. What America is is tied to what barbecue is,? Hall told The Daily Caller.

Even 7-Eleven joined in on the phenomenon, designating Sept. 28 as ?CofFree Day,? and distributing large-sized coffee in red or blue cups, depending on which candidate will receive the customer?s vote. Traditional 7-Eleven cups were available for undecideds or those who wished to remain nonpartisan.

Oddly enough, in all three elections 7-Eleven has held with its coffee-driven ?7-Election,? customers accurately predicted who would end up in the White House, according to the company. The competition continues after CofFree Day, and results are updated daily at?7-election.com.

More than 6 million cups, all representing votes, were purchased in each of the three prior competitions.

Hall said the reason so many voters participate in these polls is because the food and restaurant industries resonate so deeply with the American public.

?Most restaurant or small business owners have risked everything they have at one point, or are still risking everything they have, to make their business run, so it?s part of the economic debate that?s going on right now,? Hall said. ?It?s about that passion that a lot of Americans have, that entrepreneurial spirit that they interject themselves into.?

Still, Bill Harnisch insists the informal polls are just a fun way to express political preferences.

?My favorite story is when two brothers came in, and one wanted a blue cookie, and the other wanted a red one. Their mother said, ?This may be a free country, but it?s not a free household.? So they both had to get a Romney cookie.?

Peering to the edge of a black hole

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Using a continent-spanning telescope, an international team of astronomers has peered to the edge of a black hole at the center of a distant galaxy. For the first time, they have measured the black hole's "point of no return" -- the closest distance that matter can approach before being irretrievably pulled into the black hole.

A black hole is a region in space where the pull of gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape. Its boundary is known as the event horizon.

"Once objects fall through the event horizon, they're lost forever," says lead author Shep Doeleman, assistant director at the MIT Haystack Observatory and research associate at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA). "It's an exit door from our universe. You walk through that door, you're not coming back."

The team examined the black hole at the center of a giant elliptical galaxy called Messier 87 (M87), which is located about 50 million light-years from Earth. That black hole is 6 billion times more massive than the Sun. It's surrounded by an accretion disk of gas swirling toward the black hole's maw. Although the black hole is invisible, the accretion disk is hot enough to glow.

"Even though this black hole is far away, it's so big that its apparent size on the sky is about the same as the black hole at the center of the Milky Way," says co-author Jonathan Weintroub of the CfA. "That makes it an ideal target for study."

According to Einstein's theory of general relativity, a black hole's mass and spin determine how close material can orbit before becoming unstable and falling in toward the event horizon. The team was able to measure this innermost stable orbit and found that it's only 5.5 times the size of the black hole's event horizon. This size suggests that the accretion disk is spinning in the same direction as the black hole.

The observations were made by linking together radio telescopes in Hawaii, Arizona and California to create a virtual telescope called the Event Horizon Telescope, or EHT. The EHT is capable of seeing details 2,000 times finer than the Hubble Space Telescope.

The team plans to expand its telescope array, adding radio dishes in Chile, Europe, Mexico, Greenland, and the South Pole, in order to obtain even more detailed pictures of black holes in the future.

The work is being published in Science Express.

Apple CEO Tim Cook writes open letter to customers concerning iOS 6 Maps

Apple CEO Tim Cook has posted an open letter to customers on Apple.com concerning iOS 6 Maps. iOS 6 Maps, which replaced the original, Google-powered iOS Maps app with one that drew data from TomTom and others, but which was more wholly owned, controlled, and realized by Apple, has been the subject of controversy since launch due to the quality of data in many areas.

In the open letter, Cook apologizes for the current state of iOS 6 maps, and even goes so far as to recommend competing products from the App Store and the web. He also assures iOS 6 users that Apple will be working "non-stop" to make iOS 6 Maps live up to Apple's standards. (If you want to help Apple improve it, you can submit corrections using the built-in tools.)

Apple began buying map-releated companies in 2009. Earlier this year, iMore learned Apple planned to remove as much of Google from the core of iOS as possible, including at the location data level. It later became known that Apple and Google had been feuding for some time over features, branding, and data usage in the original maps app.

Interestingly, in a poll of iMore readers conducted last night, more than 50 percent reported a positive outlook on maps. Back before iOS 6 Maps was even announced, iMore reported on the realities of Apple's the upcoming Maps product, trying to set realistic expectations. That report now seems to have been largely accurate.

Due to the nature and importance of the problems with iOS 6 Maps, mainstream news organizations have been reporting on it throughout the last week. When that happens, Apple typically knows they have to issue a statement and take back control of the story. Previous open letters have included the iPhone 4 "antennagate", the lack of Flash plugin support in iOS, the health of Apple's late CEO, Steve Jobs, and the use of DRM (digital rights management) on iTunes music. In other words, It's a BIG DEAL and a very public sign that Apple is taking a situation very seriously.

Google is expected to release a version of their popular Maps product into the iOS App Store eventually, although they're playing it coy at this point. The deeper problem Apple still has to address is -- how could Apple let this happen? How could Apple release a product that could reasonably be seen to have this consequence, without internally identifying and pre-emptively addressing it at either of their two announcement events, WWDC or the iPhone 5 event, and how could they let the story run away from them for a over a week before responding? This isn't a case of measuring a response to an unforeseeable situation twice and cutting it loose to the press and public once. This is a case of risk assessment and mitigation gone wrong, and of brand currency expended.

Apple doesn't only have to fix maps, they have to fix the process that resulted in Tim Cook having to write this letter.

To our customers,

At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better.

We launched Maps initially with the first version of iOS. As time progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and vector-based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from the ground up.

There are already more than 100 million iOS devices using the new Apple Maps, with more and more joining us every day. In just over a week, iOS users with the new Maps have already searched for nearly half a billion locations. The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you.

While we?re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web app.

Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in the world. We know that you expect that from us, and we will keep working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard.

Tim Cook Apple?s CEO

From the lab Lumia 920 lowlight shootout with Nokia 808, iPhone 5, HTC One X and Galaxy S III video

It looks like Nokia's controversial marketing move, which involved using pro DSLRs to "simulate" low-light shooting, was even less necessary than the smartphone maker may have thought. During our visit to the company's Tampere, Finland research and development complex, we were given access to a comprehensive testing suite, enabling us to shoot with a Lumia 920 prototype and a handful of competing products in a controlled lighting environment. Technicians dimmed the lights and let us snap a static scene with each handset at just 5 lux -- a level on par with what you may expect on a dimly lit city street in the middle of the night. The 920 took the cake, without question, but the iPhone didn't fare too poorly itself, snatching up nearly as much light as the Nokia device. The 808 PureView also performed quite well, but the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S III yielded unusable results.

It's one thing to snag proper exposure, though -- capturing sharp details with little noise and superior color balance is an entirely different beast, and the Lumia managed to do just that, as you'll see in our 100-percent-view shots further on. Later in the evening we hit the streets of Helsinki for a real-world shootout. The 920 did present some issues with exaggerated shake and other rapid movements, but it offered up excellent results overall, even in scenes that were too dark for us to make out any details with our own eyes. Our nighttime shoot can be found in the gallery below, followed by plenty of comparison photos after the break.

The Perfect Start?. - Operation Muffin Top - Connecticut News

Hi all?it?s me again with a little something to start your day right! I try to put it all in perspective, I mean life and the little things we take for granted or just simply set on the back burner. Our bodies are amazing machines, and fortunately, they cover for our lack of care far to often?but that won?t last forever. It?s time to stop relying on what?s existing and start operating in excellence!

It?s the constant battle in our no-time-for-anything lifestyles, but sooner or later we are going to reap what we sow whether it hinders or helps us?so why not go with the latter of the two. I?m talking about starting our day off right?.I get it, sometimes it doesn?t happen, and I will be the first to admit it, but if we can do it more often than not, I think we?ve got something.

So what do I recommend? A green drink! Often mixed with other variations, but always staying true to a base of dark-leafy greens. Some prefer to juice, prepare ?raw? meals (which is great), but I?ll be honest, I have no time for those. So I simply blend, which also allows the fiber to remain included, acting as a broom for our digestive system. The heart of the drink is simple?it?s life. We all know that when we see lush green gardens it brings life to us, we equate it with vitality and richness, so why not feed our bodies with richness?

One of my favorites?good ol? spinach. It?s not a vibrant green for nothing people! Among many other benefits, it contains Chlorophyll (giving it the dark green color), which acts as a blood detoxifier, providing many nutrients and enzymes such as iron, calcium, B vitamins, etc. necessary for healthy body function. Benefit numero dos, it includes omega-3 essential fatty acids. These fatty acids must be provided by food and according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, ?omega-3s exert anti-inflammatory effects that may help lower your risk of many chronic diseases, including heart disease and cancer. Omega-3s also assist in brain function, such as memory and performance.

Other benefits of dark leafy greens include:
- Balancing your PH level?alkalizing (most foods we eat today create an acidic environment providing breading grounds for sickness)
- Powerful anti-oxidants that support immune function
Although the drink includes more, I believe its greatest attribute is the vitality provided through the greens! Like I said, the color is no accident, and it?s no mistake that our body and mind will thrive when we fill it with life. There is something to be said about speaking life, filling our bodies with life-giving nutrients and generating life through continual exercise and rejuvenation. We get one shot with this body?let?s give ourselves an able chance to be people of excellence!

One of my recipes:
- Loosely pack blender with your choice of a dark leafy green?about 4 cups (spinach, lettuce, kale?.spinach is pretty easy to mask the taste)
- ? cup pomegranate juice (or coconut milk)
- 1 apple (peeled and cored if you want?I don?t)
- ? cup walnuts
- ? cup water
- Anything else you want!
?and BLEND!

See you next time!

Fiona Apple concert postponed after hash arrest

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

Updated 2 p.m. PT Thursday:

Singer Fiona Apple, who was arrested Wednesday in Texas for possession of hashish and marijuana, was released from jail Thursday after posting a $10,000 bond, the Hudspeth County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Hudspeth County Sheriff's Office

According to the sheriff's office, Apple's tour bus came through a border-patrol checkpoint Wednesday night at 8 p.m. CT. During a routine citizenship check, a border-patrol canine detected the presence of controlled substances and the dog found hashish and marijuana in a blue backpack.

Apple admitted the substances were hers, and was taken to jail Wednesday night.

A concert Apple was scheduled to play Thursday night at the Moody Theater in Austin, Texas, has been postponed. A theater spokeswoman told TODAY.com she expects to announce the new date within 24 hours.

The hashtag #FreeFiona?started trending on Twitter Thursday afternoon, with fans showing support for the singer.

"So what jail are we all mailing apples to again?" wrote Maura Johnston.

Others felt Apple should have known better.?Wrote Baeblemusic, "Is anyone else confused by all the?#freefiona?battle cries? She broke the law, it's not like she's being wrongfully occupied by China."

Apple is far from the only singer to spend time in the Hudspeth County Jail for drug charges. The Huffington Post reports?that Willie Nelson, Snoop Dogg and actor Armie Hammer are among those who have been arrested at a nearby border-patrol checkpoint. According to the Huffington Post, "drug-sniffing dogs inspect more than 17,000 trucks, travelers and tour buses daily" at the checkpoint.

At least one Twitter fan felt the region's reputation should have preceded it. Tweeted Jason Cohen, "Don't they teach people about Sierra Blanca at road manager school?"

Bahrain agrees to most UN rights recommendations

GENEVA (AP) ? The tiny oil-rich kingdom of Bahrain pledged on Wednesday to improve its treatment of political activists, crack down on torture and prevent violence against ethnic and religious communities while accepting the vast majority of the U.N.'s recommendations regarding human rights.

Bahrain is now the first country to be subjected to the 47-nation U.N. Human Rights Council's reviews of all nations' records in 2008 and this year. Each time Bahrain has been subjected to a bright, somewhat harsh spotlight.

This time around, the council had issued 176 recommendations for Bahrain. Some of these focused on the government's response to the unrest that has hit Bahrain since early 2011, calling for fair trials in the wake of arrests and prosecutions of demonstrators and guarantees against the use of torture.

Others called for stepped-up cooperation with the U.N. in its attempts to investigate alleged abuses in Bahrain, where the Shiite majority has been demanding a greater political voice in the Sunni-ruled country.

For 19 months, there has been unrest in Bahrain between Shiites seeking a greater political voice and police, leaving at least 50 people dead in the strategic kingdom, a key American ally that is the base for the U.S. Navy's 5th fleet. Charges have been filed against some police for allegedly extracting forced confessions from suspected anti-government protesters.

In Geneva on Wednesday, Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid Bin Ahmed Bin Mohammed Al Khalifa told the council, the U.N.'s top human rights body, that Bahrain would accept 158 recommendations, including calls for fair trials and improved religious protections. But he rejected the recommendations for abolishing the death penalty, saying that would violate his country's constitution.

He also offered to provide an interim report on the nation's progress.

"Our actions, more than our words, should dispel any doubts regarding my government's commitment to upholding human rights through the rule of law," he said. "Let us follow the path of dialogue, not propaganda."

Al Khalifa also promised his government would tolerate dissent ? within what he called "the limits of orderly discourse in a democratic society." But, he added, "no one has the right to force factionalism upon a society against its will. We welcome peaceful expressions of disagreement, but not incitements to hatred and violence which damage the social fabric of a nation."

In November 2011, Bahrain released a 500-page report detailing widespread abuses in the Gulf kingdom's crackdowns on the Shiite-led uprising. Bahrain's rulers authorized a special commission to investigate the nation's turmoil in a bid to ease tensions and promised a broad range of reforms as a result.

The seriousness of the situation that Bahrain continues to face, however, was underscored by the presence of both the foreign minister and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Michael Posner, who came to Geneva for the Bahrain session. A private meeting between the two was planned later Wednesday.

Posner said Bahrain's government showed "great courage" by sponsoring the commission. "Ten months after the release of the report, however, we are concerned that the government is losing momentum on implementation," he said.

SkyDrive adds Recycle Bin and Excel surveys for the chronically indecisive

For all of the talk of cloud backups and sync, there isn't always a safety net when working from the cloud itself -- delete a file online and it might be gone forever. With that in mind, Microsoft just brought Windows' recycle bin concept to SkyDrive through a low-key update. You can now delete anything immediately, knowing that you can change your mind within three days -- and longer still, should the recycle bin occupy less than 10 percent of the storage limit. If you're just as uncertain about creating content as scrapping it, SkyDrive has also received support for creating and sharing Excel surveys to narrow down the scope of a project. The recycle bin should slide into your SkyDrive account within the next day; Excel surveys aren't yet polished enough, but they should be ready "soon."

With the Pirates still in playoff contention, the teams waited out two storms at Wrigley Field that pushed back the start for 3 hours, 37 minutes. The first pitch was thrown at 10:42 p.m. CDT, and Joel Hanrahan delivered the final one at 1:28 a.m. on Tuesday.

Pittsburgh tied Milwaukee for third place in the NL Central at 74-72. Both teams are 2? games behind division rival St. Louis for the second NL wild-card spot, with the Los Angeles Dodgers also in their path.

Correia (11-9) walked one and struck out six. Jason Grilli worked a hitless eighth and Hanrahan got three outs for his 36th save in 39 chances, completing the two-hitter.

The Pirates touched up Cubs starter Travis Wood for three runs in the third inning, including Marte's key triple. Jose Tabata drove in Marte with a double to deep center.

Clint Barmes was hit by a pitch and Brock Holt's single up the middle on a 3-2 count sent Barmes to third. After Correia was called out on strikes, Marte tripled to left.

Wood (6-12) worked 5 2-3 innings, giving up four hits. He walked one and struck out a career-high nine.

Pittsburgh loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth, but reliever Michael Bowden retired Holt on a grounder.

Trying to play spoiler and avoid a 100-loss season, the Cubs (58-89) had won seven of eight.

"It's kind of both for us right now," manager Dale Sveum said before the game. "These guys started talking about it a couple of weeks ago about (not) losing 100 games. That's their motivating factor as well as all of us because nobody wants to be associated with that.

"To be able to sit back and knock people out of the playoffs or knock them one game less, that's (also) what you get motivated (for) in September when you're out of it."

NOTES: The Cubs host NL Central-leading Cincinnati beginning Tuesday night, and Sveum said he doesn't want the Reds to clinch the division title this week at Wrigley Field. "Nobody wants anybody to clinch on your turf, that's for sure," Sveum said. "It's inevitable that they'll end up clinching, you just don't want them to do it at your place." ... Wood had struck out eight batters three times. ... Cubs 2B Darwin Barney extended his career-best hitting streak to 12 games with a second-inning single. ... Bryan LaHair has received limited playing time since the arrival of 1B Anthony Rizzo from the minors. Sveum said LaHair's best bet is to play in the offseason. "I think for his sake he needs to go play winter ball and get those at-bats he missed out on and be ready for spring training like he was this year," Sveum said. ... Pirates 2B Neil Walker was out of the starting lineup. Walker played in the previous three games after missing 15 because of lower back pain. Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said Walker needed a day to rest. ... The State College Spikes, the Pirates' short-season Class-A affiliate, announced a two-year player development contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. The Spikes had been affiliated with the Pirates since 2007. Pittsburgh will have to find a new short-season affiliate. ... The Pirates stole four bases in Sunday's 13-9 loss to the Cubs and are trying to be more aggressive, Hurdle said. "The baserunning numbers aren't where we want them to be this year ? the stolen bases, the caught stealing," he said. "It's a work in progress. We're doing everything we can, everybody, from our player development system on up, to create a mentality." ... Pittsburgh returns home to host Milwaukee on Tuesday night. A.J. Burnett (15-7) faces Brewers ace Yovani Gallardo (15-8).

Spain back in Davis Cup final with win over US

(AP) ? David Ferrer beat John Isner 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 to send defending champion Spain back to the Davis Cup final with a 3-1 semifinal victory over the United States on Sunday.

Helped by Isner's 70 unforced errors, the fifth-ranked Ferrer rallied to stay unbeaten on clay in the competition with his 16th straight win.

Isner was left slamming his racket in frustration.

Even without Rafael Nadal, Spain, which will try to win its fourth title in five years, stretched its record home winning streak to 24 straight. It hasn't lost on clay since 1999.

Spain will play at the Czech Republic or Argentina in November's final.

Ferrer showed again he could fill the leadership void left by the injured Nadal, who has said he will scale back his Davis Cup availability after clinching last year's final title against Argentina.

"I'm very happy and this is a dream for me. Another Davis Cup final," said Ferrer, who has played a part in each of Spain's last three titles. "For me (it's) the best emotions, Davis Cup. I really want to enjoy this moment now."

Isner had more than twice as many unforced errors as Ferrer at the near capacity 15,000-seat venue on the Asturian coast. He looked little like the player who beat Roger Federer in Switzerland in the competition earlier this year.

The American started well, ripping several of his 28 forehand winners past a tentative Ferrer, who stuck to the baseline. A pair of his 16 aces helped secure the lead when Ferrer's forehand sailed long in the first-set tiebreaker.

Isner's momentum came undone quickly, however. He started struggling with his forehand, and that helped Ferrer, who saved four of the six break points he faced, draw even and find his rhythm.

Isner was coming apart as his serve lost pace ? it clocked 143 mph in the first set. Ferrer earned triple break point in the seventh game of the third set, and the 10th-ranked American hit a forehand long to be broken. Later, Isner dropped his racket to the ground and kicked it before Ferrer moved one set from victory.

Isner's frustration carried into the fourth set as he threw his racket to the ground and kicked it again as Ferrer broke to go up 2-1.

While the Bryan brothers clinched Saturday's doubles point, the U.S. has still only once recovered from a 0-2 deficit ? in 1934.

Today's Political Rorschach Test, Romney's 'No Apology' Foreign Policy as Applied to Libya

Who Advises Romney on Foreign Policy? Bolton, Senor? Neoconservatives - Shush Walshe and Chris Good report that Dan Senor left his detail with Paul Ryan to deal with Romney more specifically on Libya. They report that Romney has long sought to distinguish himself from the president by drawing a contrast between weakness and strength, and his posture is reflected in the team he's chosen, peppered with luminaries from the Bush administration. http://abcn.ws/ScPGNO

What's an Apology? - Here's a bit of a political rhorsach test for the day. Is this 9/11 statement, issued before the embassy in Cairo was breached, an apology for American values?

"The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims - as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions. Today, the 11th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, Americans are honoring our patriots and those who serve our nation as the fitting response to the enemies of democracy. Respect for religious beliefs is a cornerstone of American democracy. We firmly reject the actions by those who abuse the universal right of free speech to hurt the religious beliefs of others."

Mitt Romney thinks so. And all of his perceived problems follow - ascribing that statement to President Obama, attacking him over it on September 11th, doing so before all the facts from the situation in Libya were known, and forcefully defending all of these decisions on Wednesday stem from that assessment.

Romney's confrontation with foreign policy in this case is not unlike John McCain's confrontation with economic policy and the Wall Street bailouts in 2008. In both cases, the candidate is thrust off-balance by developments - mirror image - not in their milieu.

How would McCain have handled this in 2008?

Today he was on the Senate floor with Lindsay Graham and Joe Liberman talking about the not sure what other word you should use but dead seems a little insensitive state department employees and urging Americans not to lose faith in Middle East Democratic movements.

Stay Tuned for Jon Karl's interview with McCain

Obama, Now Okay with Being Political on This, Says to CBS - "It appears that Governor Romney didn't have his facts right ." - http://abcn.ws/PjyAxq

On the Cairo Embassy Statement - "It didn't come from me. It didn't come from Secretary Clinton. It came from folks on the ground, who are- potentially in danger. And, you know, my tendency is to cut folks a little bit of slack- when they're in that circumstance- rather than try to- question their judgment- from the comfort of a campaign office."

On Mitt Romney - "There's a broader lesson to be learned here. And I think- you know, Governor Romney seems to have a tendency to- shoot first, name later. And as president, one of the things I've learned is you can't do that. That- you know, it's important for you to- make sure that the statements that- that you make are backed up by the facts. And that you've thought through the ramifications before you make 'em."

Ultimately, the details of when the U.S. Embassy made its first statement and to whom it was directed and whether it was before or after the walls were breached and how it interplays with tweets? all of those facts are somewhat beside the point. Although you can follow all of the developments - http://bit.ly/QSg7YP

Jake Tapper's report from this morning is another good round-up - http://abcn.ws/PbbHOl

And you can expect a more robust foreign policy debate, including focus on Obama's record in the Middle East, in the days to come.

(Emily Friedman reports, by the way, that Romney is not currently getting official security briefings.)

What does the situation in Libya, involving fundamentalists there and sparked it seems by a fringe c-rate movie linked to fundamentalists here, say about what kind of statesman Mitt Romney would be?

First, he was quick to respond. Perhaps too quick.

"I don't think we ever hesitate when we see something in violation of our principles," Romney said today.

And he drew a bright line about the attack on the embassy, regardless of who was responsible, which he termed a "breach of the sovereignty of our nation."

"I think it's a terrible course for America to stand in apology for our values, that instead when our grounds are being attacked and being breached, that the first response of the United States must be outrage at the breach of the sovereignty of our nation. An apology for America's values is never the right course," he said at an event that was quickly transformed from a campaign rally to a news conference today.

None of this should be a shock. Michael Falcone notes that there was similar language in the Tuesday night statement he released. That statement has been criticized for politicizing the tragedy before all the facts were known.

Falcone: "In fact, he uses a variation of it almost everywhere he travels - there are countless examples. And it's all traceable back to the book Romney published in March 2010: "No Apology: The Case For American Greatness."

Romney's book: "Never before in American history has its president gone before so many foreign audiences to apologize for so many American misdeeds, both real and imagined," Romney writes in the book. "There are anti-American fires burning all across the globe; President Obama's words are like kindling to them."

More from Falcone - http://abcn.ws/Pj7CWQ

His mid-summer foreign trip was another foreign policy appetizer in which the candidate banged through three countries, offending some with his opinions on British security and his thoughts on Palestinian work ethic.

Paul Ryan Dubs Romney's Foreign Policy, essentially, the "Peace Through Strength Doctrine" - http://abcn.ws/RJsXhh

Romney Can't Imagine Saying No to Meeting Netanyahu - Mitt Romney said today that he couldn't "imagine saying no" to a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu. http://abcn.ws/PbRgko (Emily Friedman)

Slain Diplomat Chris Stevens Slipped Into Libya on a Cargo Ship During Revolution-During the early days of the Libyans' fight to overthrow Moammar Gadhafi, Christopher Stevens wrangled a ride on a Greek cargo ship and sailed into the rebels' stronghold city of Benghazi. He arrived at a time when the crackle of gunfire could be heard each night. http://abcn.ws/QKe8va (Amy Bingham)

Obama Vows Justice for Slain Diplomats-President Obama today strongly condemned a deadly overnight attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, calling the murder of four Americans there an "outrageous and shocking" act and vowing to "bring to justice the killers." http://abcn.ws/Qd4pLW (Devin Dwyer)

Obama Ad Misleads on AARP Position on Romney-The Obama campaign has released their third new TV ad in 24 hours, a 30-second spot invoking the AARP Voter Guide to discredit the Romney-Ryan Medicare plan. http://abcn.ws/OGI1Yl (Devin Dwyer)

Paul Ryan Releases First TV Ad for His House Seat-Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan, a seven-term congressman from Wisconsin, released his first television advertisement of the 2012 election cycle, as he goes for two jobs at once: Ryan's seeking re-election to his House seat as he campaigns with Mitt Romney for the White House. http://abcn.ws/QJGDJk (John Parkinson)

Obama Resurfaces in Favorability, Re-opening the Popularity Gap-Barack Obama crossed into majority favorability among registered voters for the first time since spring in a new ABC News/Washington Post poll, further evidence of a convention boost. Mitt Romney trails in popularity, albeit with a number near his own high. http://abcn.ws/NnLwpn (Gary Langer)

Obama Ad Says Romney Tax Plan Dodges Details-The Obama campaign is doubling down on the argument that Mitt Romney's budget plan doesn't add up (or, as former President Bill Clinton tells it, doesn't pass the "arithmetic test"), meaning higher taxes on middle class and/or exploding deficits. http://abcn.ws/QPftLy (Devin Dwyer)
